Iowa criminal records describe any arrests and subsequent dispositions attributable to an individual. This means that Iowa criminal records are established mostly when an arrest or a conviction was made in connection with an act of crime.
As with all other criminal records in other states, Iowa criminal records are stored in the State's databases. Usually, the Iowa criminal records are stored separately according to the geographic location and jurisdiction where the crime was committed. Thus, a local Iowa criminal records database may only include records of crimes that occurred in that particular community. The data contained in these databases are then collated and reported to the county index where they are again collated and sent to the State repository.
The Iowa Criminal Records History
The Iowa criminal records history are considered as "public information." This means that any information stored in the Iowa State repository are open to the general public and anyone who wants to access them can do so with only few restrictions.
The Iowa criminal records database is called the Iowa Criminal History Records. This is maintained by the Iowa Department of Public Safety, Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI). The records are maintained at the Wallace State of Office Building in Des Moines, Iowa.
What Information is in the Iowa Criminal Records History File?
The Iowa Law requires sheriff and police departments to submit fingerprint cards to DCI for people who are arrested for serious misdemeanors or above. They may also send reports of some simple misdemeanors. Another requirement of the law is for them to start the disposition form through the system with the clerk of court. Eventually, the disposition form is sent to DCI when the case is done. If no fingerprint card and/or a disposition form are received by the DCI, the arrest information will not be recorded in the DCI files. This is why DCI does not guarantee or certify that a person has not, in fact, been convicted in an Iowa court or has no Iowa criminal records.
The DCI files only include Iowa criminal records. Therefore, you will not be able to find in DCI files other state's records, FBI records, or subjects convicted in federal court within Iowa.
How to Request for Iowa Criminal Records
Requests for Iowa criminal records are done by submitting two forms to the DCI. The forms may be obtained by mail, fax, or picking them up at the DCI. There are six forms all in all and you will need to submit the appropriate form. Form "A" for Iowa criminal records request is available on the official website of the State of Iowa.
